ENVIRONMENTAL FLOWS

Interspecial Co-existence

Vivek Kuthiya & Kaumudi Karwande

How does interspecial co-existence allow us to rethink environmental and public spaces?

Devka coast offers a dynamic landscape of terrain, vegetation, marine life, urban life and other practices. This dynamic landscape is informed by the cyclic nature of climate and seasons. The terrestrial flow of land and marine life is informed by the landscape and thus nature of the space is defined by the degree of wetness. Spatial practices like fishing, leisure, etc are informed by the dynamic landscape and its affordances for marine life. This intertwined ideas of space and stakeholders do not follow the boundaries set up by the political maps and development plans. How does one think of public space as a continuum between species, landscape, flows and practices?

2018

In 2018, there was a drastic decrease in the water levels at eco-park which is why a large water body was formed near the coast, a lot of marine life was trapped in it and it initiated fishing in that area.

2021

In 2021, Due to major construction activities happening around the eco park the marine and the semi-aquatic life along with animals and birds population started to diminish. The hard edge of the eco-park created disruption in the environmental flow.

PROGRAMME

Programme ideas:

Intend was to make a public space which affords Co -existence between all species. The method to go about this was through capturing the dynamism of the landscape with a high tide channel rejuvenation and this allowed public engagement through the idea of meandering the walkway

with surrounding trees, leisure and through seafood consumption practices
